as mayor of greater manchester. while in the west midlands, it's too close to call, with conservative incumbent andy street hoping to hold on. a baby and its mother rescued in brazil — as deadly flooding continues to cause widespread damage. and tens of thousands of madonna fans are set to crowd rio*s copacabana beach in brazil, ahead of a free concert by the us pop star. now on bbc news, sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm jane dougall. back in the premier league for the first time since 2002 — an ecstatic portman road, as ipswich are promoted to the top flight.
7:31 pm
erling haaland scores four, as arsenal cruised past bournemouth to go to the top of the premier league table. kyren wilson is into his second snooker world championship final, but who will he play? and it was a frantic finish to a brutal opening day at the giro d'italia, with favourite tadej pogacar beaten on the line. welcome to the programme. it went right down to the final day of the championship to find out who would join leicester in being promoted to the premier league. ipswich*s 2—0 win over huddersfield means they will play in the top tier next season —
7:32 pm
for the first time in 22 years — sparking incredible scenes at portman road. ben croucher reports. blue army! out of the blue — ipswich*sjourney this far has confounded expectation and perceived footballing wisdom. now, after one long season, the final hurdle. nervous? you wouldn't know it. all they had to do was avoid defeat against relegated huddersfield. over to you, wes burns. that is the moment that portland road craved! they were playing in the third tier only last season, but under young manager kieran mckenna — on a budget dwarfed by many of their nearest rivals — back—to—back promotions beckoned. time to finish with a flourish. hutchinson able to skip away... ..and score! now the party could spring into life. after two decades away, including relegation,
7:33 pm
administration, years and years of frustration... ipswich town are promoted. ..emotions overflowed at portman road. ipswich join championship winners, leicester, standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the giants of the english game next season. it's elation. it's relief as well, to be honest, because we know we put ourselves in an incredible position, and for everyone else really, you just want them to taste this and you want to get it over the line. so it's relief, it's pride, it's so many emotions, but all positive. and in this sliver of suffolk, the view from the top tier will be one to savour. ben croucher, bbc news. celebrations are probably still ongoing in ipswich — we heard from the manager in ben's report, now let's get some more reaction. it is what dreams are made of, but never did i dream this. i thought we would hopefully get to the championship, but never did i dream of getting this far. obviously, i did, but it's exceeded my dreams. talk to us about this group of players. so, so special. we've kept 78% from last season.
7:34 pm
it's our biggest strength. how close we are, how we work together, how we push each other. like i said, it's been our biggest strength this season. you know how tough the championship is, this is a monumental achievement for ipswich town, isn't it? yeah, i don't think people realise how big an achievement this is. i know i certainly did. to do it, i've been in the championship a couple of times already and it hasn't gone my way. i feel like this season, i proved a few doubters wrong. the lads knew from the start of the season we could achieve whatever we wanted to achieve this season. and, yeah, here we are. i always fancied it. always in my heart, i thought we had the potential, - we had the team, we had the manager, we had it all there to do. _ just sometimes, on the day, it might be different. - but we turned up today, i we did ourjob, and we're going to the premier league! and how good is that, as an ipswich boy? it's a mental sentence to be able to say. - i've been saying it to friends and family and stuff, - "we're going to be in the prem".
7:35 pm
i'll be in the stands- and pep guardiola will be stood on the sidelines, i and ten hag will be there. kevin de bruyne will be just running around on portland road. _ "what do you mean, exactly?!" it's a really crazy one, _ but fantastic for the club and well deserved, notjust for the players, but for kieran as well. _ so we now know who is in the playoff spots and who will play whom. norwich city will host leeds. and southampton take on west brom, after the saints won at elland road. third—placed leeds went into their game knowing they had to win and ipswich had to lose to huddersfield if they were to secure automatic promotion. but the victory for ipswich means both these sides will have to go through the play—offs to have any chance of returning to the premier league. at the other end of the table, birmingham city have been relegated back to english football's third
7:36 pm
tier for the first time since 1995, despite beating norwich on the final day. birmingham had to win to stand any chance of staying up, and they did that thanks to a 55th—minute header from south korea international paik seung—ho — his first goal for the club. but because blackburn, sheffield wednesday and plymouth argyle won, birmingham go down. the battle goes on at the top of the premier league, with both arsenal and manchester city winning convincingly today. city narrowed the gap — again — to one point after beating wolves 5—1 at the ethiad. erling haaland got four of the goals. he scored this headerfrom open play, but also converted two penalties against wolves. hwang hee—chan got one for the visitors, but then haaland got a fourth, latching onto a great ball over the top and striking in the box. haaland was substituted with ten minutes remaining, before julian alvarez got the fifth. manchester city one point behind arsenal, but with a game in hand.
7:37 pm
arsenal's 3—0 win over bournemouth at the emirates did put them four points clear for a few hours, before city's victory. it's their fourth win in a row, as they keep the pressure on their title rivals and hope the champions drop points in the few remaining games. alex fletcher was watching the match. a title challenge is all about rhythm, and mikel arteta's arsenal have found theirs. three wins in a row before this one, kai havertz asking questions early on. and just before the break, referee david coote was the one answering them. down he goes, penalty. var seeing no need to intervene. bukayo saka showing no need to panic, much to the delight of his manager. bournemouth belief did grow in the second half —
7:38 pm
dominic solanke going close. the crowd responded and so did his team—mates, leandro trossard's iith league goal of the season well worth celebrating. bournemouth did have the the ball in the net, but this contact enough for the referee to give a foul and get areola on his feet. the home side still had more to give, declan rice adding his name to the scoresheet — arsenal signalling their intent in this title race. alex fletcher, bbc news. the race for the title as tight as ever. here's what the managers said after the match, starting with arsenal boss mikel arteta. very happy. from the beginning, the quality, the composure, the energy that we played with. it seems like it's not affecting the team and i was really impressed. especially the way we played the first time. it should have been three, four, five. we didn't convert too many chances, and credit to bournemouth. they are a good side, they are a nood side, they they are a good side, they are a onod side, they created they are a good side,
7:39 pm
they are a nood side, they created a they are a good side, they created a few issues. but then we were able to bring the game back to where we wanted and be very efficient, and the result and the clean sheet makes is really happy. figs the result and the clean sheet makes is really happy-— is really happy. as a group, how are ou is really happy. as a group, how are you dealing — is really happy. as a group, how are you dealing with _ is really happy. as a group, how are you dealing with this? _ it's cat and mouse, you go first and they have to catch up. yes, it's quite emotional because you are really high. last time, we were really high. you're waiting for something and it doesn't happen. but that's where we are. we are enjoying the race and i want to continue to grow, do our bit and pray. for me, i repeat, they were better than us. they deserved to beat us today. but i don't think it should go the way it has gone, the game. because in the end, there were these key momentsjust before half—time, that is when we were playing well, we were pushing, we were having chancesjust scored 2—1, a lot of minutes to play for and, obviously, i do not agree
7:40 pm
with the refereeing today. burnley are fighting to get out of the drop zone, but their 4—1 loss to newcastle hasn't helped their situation. vincent kompany*s burnley struggled at turf moor, facing a strong newcastle side with goals from callum wilson, sean longstaff and bruno guimaraes and the fourth from alexander isak. that takes him one behind erling haaland in the race for the golden boot. newcastle moves up to sixth place in the table. we came up against a better side. the team gave it everything, i thought. we had a very good start to the game. i don't think we lacked opportunities to be dangerous ourselves. it was more, yeah, wejust couldn't match newcastle in most areas of the pitch. yeah, they have a lot of good players and, for us, we just can't let ourselves get beaten down by it. it is what it is, we have to pick ourselves up, as we've always done, and go again. anyone that's looking at a season as the end of everything or the beginning
7:41 pm
of everything when the season starts, for me, is a fool in this game. you have to continue, keep going, and you don't always get the reward for the hard work you put in. but eventually, you have to believe that you will get the reward, and that's what we're doing. that's the only thing that matters. we're going to approach next week again with an idea of doing something special when we play spurs away. really good performance from us. i think a difficult start to the game, we knew that burnley would be absolutely on it. it was a big game for them and we knew it was an intimidating place to come. but once we got control of the game and started to settle, i thought we showed our quality and scored four great goals, it could have been more. a hugely significant win for nottingham forest, beating sheffield united 3—1 at bramall lane. callum hudson—odoi scored twice to put forest three points clear of the relegation zone. but already—relegated sheffield united have an unwanted joint record of conceeding 100 goals in the premier league.
7:42 pm
the home side scored first from a penalty, perhaps causing concern for forest manager nuno espirito santo, but hudson—odoi's goal drew forest level in the first half. ryan yates then put them ahead after the break. and hudson—odoi scored again to seal the win in the second half. that was the 100th premier league goal conceded by sheffield united this season, equalling the record set by swindon town in 1993—94. a frustrating day for the hosts was compounded when anel ahmedhodzic was sent off for a second yellow. it's good because the players reacted really well when sheffield scored. it was not easy and that shows and tells a lot about the character and the togetherness of the players. but we have to go, we have to keep on going, it is not over. i think we made a good step. it was important, but it is not over. rest, recover well and prepare for chelsea.
7:43 pm
as you said, work still to do, more points to be won, how much of a boost is this for the last two games? it's very important we stick with advantages. it's in our hands and we cannot ever lose that. we decide our own destiny. brentford striker ivan toney has now gone ten league games without scoring, after the west london derby with fulham ended goaless. toney registered just one shot on target — and two in total. fulham moved up to 12th place, while brentford remain 16th. celtic are six points clear at the top of the scottish premiership, before rangers face kilmarnock tomorrow. it's after they beat hearts 3—0 at celtic park. kyogo furuhashi got the first two, before matt o'riley scored from the spot to make it three. st mirren beat dundee 3—1 at dens park. let's look at the top of the scottish premiership. celtic are six points clear. rangers play kilmarnock tomorrow. remember, their next game
7:44 pm
is the old firm derby. hearts are in third, for a place in the europa league next season. dundee and st mirren battling for a europa conference league spot. at the other end, after the split, livingston have been relegated, after their 4—1 defeat to motherwell. there were just two games today in the women's super league. aston villa beat brighton 1—nil in their first match since manager carla ward announced she'd be leaving at the end of the season. and tottenham hotspur came back from two goals down to get a draw at everton. drew spence and beth england scoring either side of half time. the result means no change of position in the table with spurs remaining sixth and everton staying in ninth. chelsea play tomorrow evening, when they host bristol city at kingsmeadow. but there was a shock announcement today that their record goal scorer fran kirby will leave the club at the end of the season. kirby has been at chelsea for nine years, making more than 200 appearances and scoring 115 goals. she's helped the club win six wsl titles, four fa cups
7:45 pm
and two league cups. kirby said it had been an incrediblejourney. let's take a quick look at some of the other sports news stories making the headlines. it was a difficult miami sprint race for formula 1's british drivers, with mclaren's lando norris crashing out at the first corner, and mercedes* lewis hamilton demoted out of a points position after receiving a 20—second time penalty. at the front of the pack, championship leader max verstappen extended his points advantage with a win from pole, beating ferrari's charles leclerc in second. world number two aryna sabalenka is facing world number one iga swiatek to defend her madrid open title, in a rematch of last year's final. swiatek took the first set 7—5, but sabalenka fought back to take the second. it's currently 1—1 in the deciding set. great britain's georgia—mae fenton has won bronze in the uneven bars final at the women's european gymnastics championships. rebecca downie finished 7th.
7:46 pm
great britain are attempting to defend their team title in rimini, italy this weekend. to sheffield now. kyren wilson made it a comfortable 17—11 win over david gilbert, as he reached his second snooker world championship final at the crucible. wilson started with a clinical display on friday evening when he opened up a 14—10 advantage, then continued in today's concluding session. the world number 12 will now face jakjones or the 2015 champion stuart bingham in the final. hazel irvine is with two former champions, shaun murphy and john parrott. our first finalist in this year's 2024 cazoo world championship is kyren wilson, the warrior battled through against dave gilbert today. how did he get it done, shaun murphy? great technique, great belief. got to the final here a couple of years ago and he will have learnt
7:47 pm
so much about himself in the years gone by since then. his technique, the foundation of his game, when he was put under pressure by the crucible theatre let alone dave gilbert, he stood up to it. and he did put him under pressure, winning the first frame of their opening session this afternoon, but that was it, it was one—way traffic afterwards. the third session broke the back of the match, he was always up against it. he just needed to fire and he never really did from session three. he was never scoring heavily and putting him under pressure. but the clearance to win and get over the line was fantastic from kyren. what kind of proposition is he now in a final compared with four years ago, when he met 0'sullivan during covid times and a crucible theatre that was completely empty? he's completely empty. kyren and i grew up in the same county and i left northamptonshire 20 years ago, and i still have my spies there and i know there is not a professional player on the planet who practises as diligently or as hard as kyren wilson.
7:48 pm
he's looked under every single stone for every clue he can find to become the best player he can and he's right on the verge of winning snooker*s biggest prize. and he's going to play a qualifier tomorrow in the final, but we just don't know which one, whether it will be former champion stuart bingham, who came through the qualifying rounds this time, orjakjones. he has taken everyone back once again, world number 1m. and he has looked unflappable in the matches and has beaten some good players, judd trump along the way, there is no fluke, he is a proper quality match player that plays the right shots to a very high standard, and stuart has not got flowing. usually scores heavily, but he just cannot get in. three frames behind, the former world champion. from your point of view, what do you think we are in for this evening? i think stuart will come out all guns blazing, he will have to, because if the match takes the same pattern, i think jakjones runs out the winner. we will find outjust how important the last frame of their session this morning was. stuart clawed his way back in, he showed great courage to win that
7:49 pm
last frame and has given himself a sniff. if he had been more behind, i thinkjak would already have had one foot in the final. that final session starts at seven o'clock tonight and kyren wilson awaits one of them. leinster are through to the european champions cup final, after they survived a late fightback to beat norhampton 20—17 at croke park. a hat—trick of tries from james lowe was enough to see the home side in to the final, this one coming just after the break. the second semi—final between tolouse and harlequins takes place tomorrow. gloucester have reached the challenge cup final for a fifth time after beating benneton 40—23. (00v)there were just four 40-23. there were just four points between the two sides at half—time, but three tries in the second half — including this one from freddie clarke — was enough to get them the victory. gloucester are hoping to win the tournament for a third time. the final is at the tottenham hotspur stadium on the 24th of may. they will face south african side sharks. let's take you to cycling now, and the first grand tour of the year, the giro d'italia, is under way. britain's geraint thomas is among the contenders, but despite finishing second last
7:50 pm
year, he's not the favourite. two—time tour de france champion tadej pogacar is widely expected to be crowned champion in rome in three weeks time, but he wasn't the opening stage of grand tours are usually a gentle introduction to a slog, but a serene start near turin eventually ended up with the field being ripped apart. tadej pogacar has won the tour de france tries, but this was his debut at the giro. he likes to turn the screw on his rivals and when he attacked on the penultimate climb, some fell by the wayside. one of the expected contenders, frenchman romain bardet, saw his french hopes dented on the opening day. last year, britain's geraint thomas lost on the penultimate day. wearing red and number one, he kept pogacar in his sights. the slovenian took the lead on the final climb with two miles
7:51 pm
to go, but he was not alone. on his shoulder was his team—mate from ineos grenadierthonatan narvaez, he timed his finish to perfection and will swap his ecuadorian championjersey for the race leader's pink one. much to the delight of thomas, who finished tenth, proving he and ineos will be in this fight. nfl franchise the chicago bears, alongside britain's first female coach in the nfl phoebe schecter, have launched the first ever girls only flag football league in manchester. it's only the second of its kind backed by an nfl team outside of london. alice scarff reports. some of these girls have their sights set on representing great britain in flag football. the sport was recently announced to be part of the olympic games in la 2028. it's mint, i love it.
7:52 pm
i've not seen as many girls play flag, it's fab. because it is becoming an olympic sport, i would like to do that and try and get into it that way. i like how it bringsl everyone together. i've played with multiple countries and it isjust good to see every- country coming together in a big massive family. | phoebe schecter was the first female british coach in the nfl. she's an ambassador for the girls—only league and she led the bears' expansion to manchester. it's pretty full circle to me to be a manchester now, the place i first started playing american football. the bears approached nfl flag a few months ago and said, we want to get outside of london and where should we go? for me, ifelt like manchester was a no—brainer. just the incredible athleticism we have here. former chicago bears cornerback and superbowl winner shaun gayle, who now lives in the north west, was pleased to see his old team supporting like this. supporting leagues like this. this has such an opportunity because we talk about the olympics coming up, we talk about girls' football, flag football, one day,
7:53 pm
we will talk about men and women playing together in the mixed leagues, so all that is on the table and something we're looking forward to seeing. the nfl draft has just taken place in michigan, which sees over 200 athletes added to the league's roster, and local flag teams have used this launch as a mini draft of their own. i am definitely scouting i to see who i want to get. to be honest, i would have them all. my passion is getting kids playing football, so the more girls i can get to come down, the better. _ that's what we want, really. as part of the programme, scholarships will be offered to athletes in the uk to play and study in the us, and plenty here want to follow in phoebe's footsteps. there are just under six weeks to go until the euros. scotland fan craig ferguson set off today, in an attempt to walk more than 1,000 miles from glasgow to munich in a kilt to watch scotland face germany in the opening game of euro 202a. the 20—year—old will travel
7:54 pm
through six countries in total to raise money for a men's mental health charity. as he started hisjourney from glasgow's hampden park, ferguson was wearing a custom—made kilt, which included a tartan for each of the countries scotland will face in their group. it'll take him 37 days to walk through scotland, england, the netherlands, belgium, luxembourg and germany. this seems a bit crazy on the surface level, but when i thought about it on a deeper level and i thought, what issue could i raise while doing this challenge? i thought raising awareness for men's mental health was an issue super close to my heart. and i know hundreds of thousands of other people across the country as well. so i feel like with football as well, it is such a hyper masculine environment that i feel like some men feel a bit ashamed to really speak up and talk about their emotions, especially when they're struggling. so i want this whole journey and this challenge to reallyjust be a message to men across the world that you're not alone
7:55 pm
and you don't need to struggle. if this can be the sort of catalyst that lets men talk, then i will be super proud of that. so to recap our top story, ipswich town are back in the premier league after a 22 year absence after beating huddersfield 2—0. one fan missing from portman road was ed sheeran, but hejoined in the celebrations from afar! iam in i am in miami, i iam in miami, i have i am in miami, i have to pay for sponsorship somehow! i'm back on wednesday. do you guys want to go out? obviously! iwill wednesday. do you guys want to go out? obviously! i will be in touch with marcus and we will find some way. with marcus and we will find some wa . ~ ., with marcus and we will find some wa. ., ., ., way. well done, congratulations! what an amazing _ way. well done, congratulations! what an amazing night _ way. well done, congratulations! what an amazing night out - way. well done, congratulations! what an amazing night out that l way. well done, congratulations! | what an amazing night out that is going to be and i bet he will pick up going to be and i bet he will pick up the check. that's all from sportsday. goodbye.
7:56 pm
hello there. saturday saw much cooler weather across scotland and northern ireland. now, friday was a really warm and sunny day, one of the warmest we've seen actually this year, with temperatures widely of 23 degrees in western scotland. today, well, temperatures are about nine degrees lower. the big reason for that change is we had much more extensive cloud and the cloud was thick enough to bring some quite persistent rain to northern ireland. cloud sheets extended southwards from scotland into the north of both england and wales. the best of the sunshine was to the south of that. now, overnight tonight, we're going to keep those cloudy skies in place across scotland and northern ireland, still with a few patches of rain around, probably a few mist areas as well. across wales, the midlands, east anglia, southern england, dry to start off with, the night, we'll probably start to see some splashes of rain arrive towards south—west england by the end of the night. and that rain is all tied in with a weather front that's moving up from france.
7:57 pm
so through sunday, that weather front will extend northwards, bringing some rain across from south—west england into southern wales, central, southern england. scotland and northern ireland stay cloudy, with a few patches of rain. the best of the sunshine will be across north wales, parts of northern england, the midlands, east anglia and south—east england. and where the sunshine comes out, it should feel quite pleasant. now, heading into bank holiday monday, low pressure's to the south of the uk, with this weather front still bringing the threat of some rain across southern counties of england. the rain may well turn more showery in nature through the afternoon, but those showers could be heavy and thundery. further north, we're also likely to see some thunderstorms break out across parts of scotland and northern england as well, but that still leaves parts of wales, into the midlands and parts of northern england, where we'll have the best of the day's sunshine breaking through. temperatures not doing too badly. we're looking at highs between 15 and 17 degrees. but then as we look at the forecast deeper into next week, high pressure is going to start to dominate the weather picture. it's not the strongest
7:58 pm
high you've ever seen, so there probably will still be some showers around. and for tuesday, those showers are most likely to form across western areas of the country. the best of the sunshine, east anglia, southern counties of england, northern ireland probably not doing too badly as well. top temperatures ranging from around 16 to 19 degrees celsius. feeling pleasant in any sunshine. and the trend is for there to be quite a lot of dry weather through the rest of the week ahead, with temperatures rising in the warmest spots more widely into the low—20s.
